Snooker: Peter Ebdon turned on the style in York last night to hit Malta's Tony Drago for six at the UK Championship. The LG Cup runner-up is two thirds of the way to the quarter-finals of the £746,000 event at the Barbican Centre.
World number seven Ebdon resumes tonight with a 6-2 advantage after winning the last four frames in 51 minutes.
Drago scored only 10 points in the closing three frames as the Scottish Open champion knocked in breaks of 117, 69 and 71.
But Drago isn't without hope. He recovered from 6-2 and 8-5 down to beat Irishman Fergal O'Brien 9-8 in the previous round.
Earlier, European Open champion Styephen Hendry took centre stage to build a handsome 6-2 overnight lead over Sussex rival Mark Davis.
Jimmy White's last ranking event win was the 1992 UK Championship.
If he's to bridge the nine-year gap he must fathom out how to fight back from 5-3 down against Welshman Matthew Stevens.
CYCLING: Robin Seymour extended his remarkable record in the national cyclo-cross championships on Saturday, taking his 11th successive title, reports Shane Stokes.
Seymour raced into the lead early in the nine-lap race, with chief rival Don Travers (Banbridge CC) initially staying within six seconds. However, the gap started to open on the fourth lap and from there Seymour drew steadily away.
Strong over both the cycling and running sections of the technical course in Lurgan Park, the Wicklow Off-Road Club rider won by 59 seconds.
Travers took silver for the second year in succession, with road specialist Tommy Evans impressing in beating Robert Lamont for bronze.
ROWING: The Irish Amateur Rowing Union became a limited company on Saturday. An e.g.m. of the union in Dublin also agreed that the name Rowing Ireland would sometimes be used as a trading name, reports Liam Gorman.
The overall winner of the Irish indoor rowing championships in Santry yesterday was experienced Briton Chris Rushton, who was clocked at .8 of a second faster than Seβn Jacob of Neptune. Eamon Joyce of UCC was the fastest man on the day at five minutes 59.3 seconds and won the heavyweight category.
