Jonathan Edwards, Britain's only remaining serious gold medal hope, survived his critical first test when he qualified for the triple jump final. Edwards, Britain's only gold medallist at the 1995 championships in Gothenburg, qualified with his first jump in anger for nearly six weeks. The 31-year-old world record holder leapt out to 17.28 metres to answer the fears that a heel problem would wreck any chance of a successful defence of his crown. "It's a big psychological boost," admitted Edwards. "I felt great, no problems with the leg at all, no niggles. "I can have a good rest now and I will be raring to go on Friday. This rids me of any remaining injury worries in my mind."
