Netherlands: Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld yesterday admitted Holland will be more formidable if Edwin van der Saar returns in his place.

A thigh injury kept the Juventus goalkeeper on the sidelines against France, giving Westerveld his first start in Euro 2000.

Westerveld was at fault for France's first goal, though he later made two crucial saves to help secure Holland's 3-2 victory.

"I think it's better for the team that van der Saar plays because I still think he is the best goalkeeper we have," Westerveld said. 99121209 Euro 2000: Sukur carrying minor injury.

Turkey: Striker Hakan Sukur picked up an injury in training yesterday. "Hakan Sukur is slightly injured," said general manager Can Cobanoglu. "We hope he can play (in the quarter-final against Portugal tomorrow), but we do not know yet."

France: Midfielder Emmanuel Petit is France's only injury worry as they prepare for the quarter-final against Spain in Bruges on Sunday. The Arsenal player injured his right knee in the match against the Czech Republic and was left out of the team which lost 2-3 to the Netherlands on Wednesday. He was undergoing more treatment with the hope that he would resume normal training today.

Norway: Nils Johan Semb has revealed the heartache of a tactical decision which cost his country a place in the quarter-finals. The Norway coach told his players to settle for a draw against Slovenia in Arnhem, safe in the knowledge that Spain were losing to Yugoslavia in Bruges.

It was a dangerous game to play and backfired spectacularly as the Spaniards found two goals in stoppage time to dump Norway out of the tournament.

Semb said: "We told them from the bench Yugoslavia were leading and a draw would be enough for us. Ninety-nine per cent of the time that would have been enough."
