Colin Montgomerie

Played 5. Won 3, halved 1, lost 1.

Top points scorer in the match. Sought help from old coach Bill Ferguson after losing start and then won next three games - two with Langer and the other with Clarke. Might have had fourth win but offered Hoch a half.

Played 4. Won 3, lost 1.

Changed putters after he and Montgomerie lost opening fourballs to Woods and O'Meara. Revenge was sweet in foursomes and the pair then beat Janzen and Furyk. Made sure of European win with victory over Faxon.

Costantino Rocca

Played 4. Won 3, lost 1.

After failing to win point on 1993 debut has now won three points in each of the last two matches. Won twice with Olazabal and then pulled off famous win over world No 2 Woods.

Jose Maria Olazabal

Played 5. Won 2, halved 1, lost 2.

A year ago he could not walk, so no wonder he cried after being part of winning team again. Two wins with Rocca and a half with fellow Spaniard Garrido, but lost singles against Janzen after being two up with three to play.

Per-Ulrik Johansson

Played 2. Won 2.

Won opening fourballs with Jesper Parnevik against Lehman and Furyk, then surprisingly did not play again until singles. Took on United States PGA champion Love and beat him 3 and 2 for vital early point.

Jesper Parnevik

Played 4. Won 1, halved 2, lost 1.

Grew in stature the moment he sank two great birdie putts to win opening game with Johansson. Then secured two halves with Garrido, but lost 5 and 4 to O'Meara in singles.

Nick Faldo

Played 5. Won 2, lost 3.

Two wins out of four with Westwood. First of them gave him record points haul of 24 to go with record 11th cap. Second victory came against Woods and O'Meara. Even though he finished with two defeats he justified wild-card choice.

Lee Westwood

Played 5. Won 2, lost 3.

Rose TO the occasion wonderfully. Found perfect partner in Faldo and at 24 could now develop into major force. Came up against a hot Maggert in singles, but will take away only good memories of his debut.

Thomas Bjorn

Played 2. Won 1, halved 1.

Left out of first-day action, but then with Woosnam beat Leonard and Faxon in fourballs. Faced Open champion Leonard again in singles, lost the first four holes, but battled back brilliantly to get a half

Ignacio Garrido

Played 4. Halved 3, lost 1.

Cup career began with three halved games, two with Parnevik and then one with Olazabal. Was thrashed seven and six by Lehman in singles, but proved himself the possessor of a steely nerve.

Darren Clarke

Played 2. Won 1, lost 1.

Also kept waiting for debut until second-day fourballs, when he and Montgomerie brought down fourtime World Cup winners Couples and Love on the last. Needed to beat Mickelson in singles to earn £100,000 Ferrari from sponsors, but lost 2 and 1.

Ian Woosnam

Played 2. Won 1, lost 1.

Came out firing after sitting out first day and played superbly as he and Bjorn won. But is still looking for first win in eight singles. He and Couples halved in the last two matches, but this time the American blitzed him 8 and 7.
