GOLF/Seniors: England's Brian Evans produced one of the finest performances of his life to defeat Tommy Horton 2 and 1 in the second round of the European Seniors Matchplay championship at the new Flamingos club in southern Spain, yesterday.

Evans, the 50-year-old director of golf at the Pinheiros Altos club in Portugal, who got into this event as a sponsor's invitation, now goes on to meet Jamaica's Delroy Cambridge, a 5 and 4 victor over England's Ian Mosey.

Spain's Antonio Garrido kept the home hopes very much alive with a decisive 5 and 4 victory over Scotland's John Chillas. Garrido will now face Northern Ireland's Eddie Polland, who emerged with a 3 and 2 win against Brazil's Priscillo Diniz.

Number one seed Denis Durnian scraped through at the 19th hole against Ian Mosey.

The fourth quarter-final will involve Scotland's Mike Miller and England's Nick Job, who both won their respective matches 4 and 3. Job beat Ireland's Joe McDermott, who could not build on his first-round win over Bernard Gallacher.

US TOUR: Former US Open champions Steve Jones and Lee Janzen opened the $5 million Las Vegas Classic on different courses on Wednesday, but both posted nine-under-par scores to share the first-round lead in the 90-hole event.

Jones, after a 62 on the TPC at The Canyons course, and Janzen, following a 63 on the TPC at Summerlin, were one stroke ahead of US PGA champion Rich Beem and JL Lewis, who both hit eight-under 64s on a warm and windless day.

Paul Stankowski, John Huston, Glen Day, Notah Begay, Jonathan Byrd, Chris Riley, Scott Verplank and Dan Forsman all had seven-under 65s.
