Arsene Wenger again insisted he would ignore Alex Ferguson's attempts to unsettle his side as he responded yesterday to his mind-games by unashamedly setting his sights on winning the treble.
Wenger has been seemingly untroubled by Ferguson's bid to raise the stakes in the title race by accusing Arsenal of showing an "over-confidence" that could return to haunt them.
Indeed, by insisting that not even winning the Champions League would fulfil all his dreams, his response was to be even more outwardly confident than ever.
"I don't know what he means. I tell my players to be confident in their ability but it doesn't mean they're arrogant or flashy," said Wenger ahead of his side's FA Cup quarter-final against Chelsea today.
"It doesn't disturb me, it's funny. Talk is not important in football, what's important is how you play. That's why we ignore what is said outside of here.
"I have confidence in them because I know their ability, their spirit and their determination to win it again. There's a long way still to go but we believe we can do it again. I'm confident and so are my players. I'd rather be in our position than anyone else's."
Wenger was in no mood to play down his sense of confidence as he discussed becoming the first manager in England to win back-to-back domestic doubles, as well as triumphing in the Champions League.
"Having done the double last year, I can't say we don't want to win the treble. I'd be a liar otherwise," he added.
"Of course, we want to win every competition and it's very difficult to choose between them as the momentum is so important in football. We know we can be successful as we did it last year. Now we want to do it again and it takes a special strength to do that.
"My target is to do as well with my team as I can. Trophies are the concrete sign of success but you can sometimes win a trophy and feel you have not gone as far as you could quality-wise."
Ferguson had directed another barbed comment towards north London recently, observing that "somebody close to Arsenal told me that Arsene Wenger reads everything I say".
Wenger smiled as he added: "He doesn't know me well then!" The Arsenal boss will rest Dennis Bergkamp against Chelsea, while he could again leave Thierry Henry on the bench, but he is still determined to keep his side's momentum going on all three fronts.
"Last time I was accused of not playing a strong team, we beat Manchester United at Old Trafford. I have only a strong team," he said, while confirming that Francis Jeffers would start.
"We have a good record against Chelsea, but we have a good record against everyone in England."
That sounded just like the cockiness which Ferguson had been complaining about, but Wenger simply smiled again.
"It is just the truth as we have been champions or runners-up in each of the past five seasons," he stated. "In the past 18 or 20 months, we have created a style and tried to do well.
"Now let's see how far we can go as we are in a good position and every game is now a cup final for us.
"Even if I won the Champions League, I don't think I would claim to be satisfied. As long as I stay at Arsenal, there will be plenty of challenges for me.
"I want to win the Premiership again and the FA Cup again. And then I'll want to win them both once again. I'm still a long way from fulfilling all my dreams."
