City Of Derry, last year's Ulster representatives in the All-Ireland Jimmy Bruen Foursomes, are out of this years competition, beaten by Donegal in the most unusual circumstances.
The first-round matchplay clash was staged at Strabane and the result hinged on the last match. The teams were level at two matches each as Donegal's Denis Kelly and Seamus Faulkner approached the last hole. It's a tricky entrance to the 18th with the first and 17th on either side.
Faulkner, the Murvagh club's PRO, sliced his approach on to the second fairway and up stepped Kelly to retrieve the situation. His three-iron approach to the home green was remarkable. He blocked the ball out-of-bounds but it hit the roof of the clubhouse, bounced on to the chef's car, breaking the window, landed on the waiting area at the first tee, struck a wall and ended up five yards through the home green.
The hole was halved in fives and with the Donegal pair one up, the Murvagh men are through on a three matches to two ticket to the next round.
