Golf fans hoping to catch some Walker Cup action this weekend will be able to buy tickets at the gates, the R&A announced this afternoon.

However, these tickets will be limited to just 1,000, bringing the total daily spectator numbers for the amateur showpiece at Royal County Down to 10,000.

The action takes place at the Newcastle venue on Saturday and Sunday, with each day's play comprising four morning foursomes (starting at 8.30am) and eight afternoon singles.

There is massive local interest in the event, particularly as local stars Rory McIlroy and Jonathan Caldwell will be involved.

"We initially intended permitting 8,000 spectators in on each of the two days but in May decided to increase the daily attendance to 10,000," explained David Hill.

"There are still roughly 1,000 tickets left for each day and we will be allowing these spectators to pay at the gates."
