GROUP E: PSV Eindhoven's Jefferson Farfan struck early to clinch a 1-0 win over AC Milan last night and put his side top of the group.

PSV took the lead after 12 minutes when Farfan fired past Dida from eight metres after capitalising on a weak backward header by Kakha Kaladze towards the Brazilian keeper.

Milan threatened after the break, but Clarence Seedorf and subsititute Andriy Shevchenko, left out of the starting lineup because of a heel injury, were denied by PSV keeper Gomes.

The Italian side were reduced to 10 men six minutes from time when Jaap Stam was sent off for a second yellow card after slipping and grabbing Da Marcus Beasley's shirt.

In the group's other game, Schalke 04 beat nine-man Fenerbahce 2-0 with goals from Kevin Kuranyi and Ebbe Sand to revive their chances of qualifying.

Fenerbahce fell behind in the 32nd minute when Kuranyi outjumped their defence to convert a cross from Lincoln and red cards for Brazilians Fabio Luciano and Marco Aurelio left them two men down by the 55th minute.

Schalke had several nervous moments before substitute Sand rose to head in a cross from Rafinha and settle the match in the first minute of added time.

The German side, bottom of the group at start of play, retain a chance of making the knockout phase with games to come at home to PSV Eindhoven and away to AC Milan.

GROUP F: Real Madrid qualified for the knockout stage when they beat Rosenborg Trondheim 2-0 in last night.

An own goal and a strike by Guti earned Real the victory and nine points from four games, three behind Olympique Lyon.

Real Madrid went ahead in the 26th minute when Rosenborg defender Mikael Dorsin knocked in an own goal as he ran back trying to intercept a cross by Robinho.

And Spain midfielder Guti made it 2-0 in the 41st minute with a shot from 14 metres after latching on to a ball bouncing free after Robinho was tackled inside the area.

Olympique Lyon also booked their place in the Champions League knockout stage when they came from behind to crush Olympiakos Piraeus 4-1.

A double from Norway striker John Carew and strikes by Juninho and Mahamadou Diarra gave the French champions an easy win after they fell behind to an early goal by Haruna Babangida.

The home side began brightly at the Karaiskakis Stadium and took the lead in the third minute when a superb through ball from Pantelis Kafes found Haruna Babangida who fired home.

The goal set the game up for Olympiakos and with Rivaldo showing glimpses of his past glories they played the better football for much of the first half.

However, Lyon found themselves ahead in the space of three minutes just before the break. Rivaldo's foul on the influential Diarra let Juninho in for the equaliser and a defensive mix-up then gave Carew the space to fire the visitors in front.

Goalkeeper Kleopas Giannou spread himself well to parry Carew's shot in the 55th minute but was unfortunate that it bounced straight to Diarra who scored the third.

And Giannou couldn't be held accountable for Lyon's fourth as woeful defending from a free-kick allowed Carew to get his head to the ball which deflected off Yiannis Okkas into the corner.
