Brad Faxon won the storm delayed play-off for the BC Open yesterday to beat Fred Funk and take the $288,000 winners cheque.
It was Faxon's his first victory of the season. The two players were approaching the second play-off hole on Sunday when darkness stopped play. Faxon parred the hole and it was enough to see off Funk who was in trouble off the tee and could only manage a bogey.
Hurricane Floyd forced two rounds to be played Sunday and Funk finished the third round with a three-shot lead. But he carded a 72 over the next 18 holes. Faxon was five shots back after 54 holes but fired a 67 to draw even.
Funk saw his lead evaporate as Faxon birdied three of the last five holes. Meanwhile, Funk posted his fourth bogey of the final round at the par-4 15th before making a two-foot birdie on the 72nd hole to force the not-so-sudden death.
Rory Sabbatini had a chance to make it a three-way play-off but parred the final regulation hole and finished one shot back with a 70.
Faxon's best finish in 16 events before this week was 13th at the Greater Greensboro Classic in April. The 38-year-old has five career wins, his most recent coming at the 1997 Freeport McDermott Classic. Until yesterday he had earned only $250,108 this season.
