Wayne Rooney's move from Everton to Manchester United may have dominated transfer deadline day, but there was plenty of activity elsewhere
The day's on-off transfer concerned Spanish midfielder Miguel Angel Angulo, who is not now moving from Valencia to Arsenal.
Arsenal appeared to have got their man when 27-year-old Angulo spoke of his decision to move to Highbury rather than Stamford Bridge, despite interest from Chelsea.
But it soon transpired Angulo was going nowhere when it was confirmed in Spain that he instead signed a new four-year deal with his current employers, despite travelling to London for a medical.
His agent Jose Luis Tamargo said: "Fear overcame him that he could not fit in at Arsenal nor with the English lifestyle.
"We thank Arsenal for their understanding, because happiness is more important at times than anything else in life and in this case Angulo has followed his heart."
West Brom were more successful, bagging 24-year-old Japan international and former Arsenal player Junichi Inamoto - currently injured - on a two-and-a-half-year contract and Cosmin Contra on a season-long loan deal from Spain's Atletico Madrid.
The midlanders will pay Gamba Osaka £200,000 for Inamoto when he makes his first competitive appearance.
Under the terms of the Contra deal, West Brom will pay Atletico a set fee for each game the 28-year-old right-back plays.
Southampton, meanwhile, announced that they had secured the signature of Andreas Jakobsson on a two-year deal.
The 31-year-old has signed from Brondby for a fee of around £1million and becomes head coach Steve Wigley's first signing.
The centre-back joins his international team-mates Michael Svensson, Anders Svensson and Mikael Nilsson at St Mary's.
Middlesbrough striker Massimo Maccarone has joined Serie A club Parma on loan for the remainder of the season.
The £8.1million forward has struggled to make an impact at the Riverside since his switch from Empoli in July 2002 and has fallen down the pecking order after the arrivals of Mark Viduka and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink in the summer.
"Massimo has been a bit unfortunate that we have so many strikers at the club that we can't give them all a game," manager Steve McClaren said.
Inter Milan duo Gonzalo Sorondo and Nicola Ventola moved the other way as they joined Crystal Palace on loan.
North of the border, the big story was the news that Dwight Yorke was in talks with Celtic.
The Scottish champions are looking to take the former Manchester United striker to Glasgow for the remainder of his contract with Rovers.
Yorke has fallen out of favour at Ewood Park this season where manager Graeme Souness appears to favour a forward line of Scotland international Paul Dickov and Jon Stead.
The only other cross-border deal involved Craig Rocastle's move from Chelsea to Hibernian on a four-month loan.
Portsmouth have signed Valery Mezague from Montpellier for an undisclosed fee.
The 21-year-old Cameroon international was at Fratton Park last night to discuss personal terms and could make his debut against Crystal Palace on September 11th.
Derby goalkeeper Andy Oakes moved to Bolton on loan for three months.
