Garda 1-13 UCD 1-6A goal two minutes from the end of normal time from substitute David Fenton saw the Garda Training College, Templemore, into the quarter-final of the Sigerson Cup yesterday, in Templemore, when they defeated rivals UCD in a tempestuous game.
Leading by just two points at the halfway mark having played with the aid of the breeze 0-9 to 1-4 - the UCD goal coming from Shane Lennon in the 22nd minute - Garda appeared to have a big fight on their hands against the Dublin side.
However, some wonderful score-taking from full forward Cormac Bane kept them in front for the duration of the half and even though they lost Kildare defender Padraig Mullarkey with a damaged elbow, they were holding on well for victory when Fenton came off the bench and rattled the UCD net after a long run from defence.
Best for Garda were James Masters, Cormac Bane, David Hickey, and Mervyn Lee while for UCD, Austin O'Malley, Billy Sheahan, Mark Ward, John McCarthy and Mark Duffy were prominent.
