Champions' League Draw:Manchester United's jubilation after drawing Lille, regarded as the weakest team still left in the competition, will be tempered only by Alex Ferguson's memories of the French side being one of the dirtiest he has faced in Europe.
Ferguson was incensed by Lille's "pathetic" tactics in their two Champions League group games against them last season. The United manager has since complained bitterly about what he perceived to be unduly aggressive and negative tactics, though he put on a diplomatic front last night, saying he was "really looking forward to the tie".
Ferguson watched Lille draw 2-2 with St-Etienne on Sunday and told his colleagues Claude Puel's side were as physical and aggressive as he remembered. Nonetheless, there was delight to draw a side who lie 16 points behind leaders Lyon in the French first division. Ferguson's mood was enhanced by confirmation Lille's stadium does not meet Uefa regulations so the game will be switched to Lens's Bollaert stadium, while Edwin Van der Sar has agreed a one-year contract extension that runs until 2008.
Arsene Wenger feels Arsenal's Champions League tie against PSV Eindhoven will be decided by their performance in the first leg in Holland, a belief shaped by his experiences over the past two campaigns.
Last season Arsenal won 1-0 at Real Madrid, held the Spanish side at Highbury and went on to reach the final. A year earlier they were eliminated after a 3-1 defeat at Bayern Munich left too much to do.
"We didn't do well at Bayern Munich in the first game and we went out," Wenger said.
"We did well at Real Madrid in the first game last season and we qualified."
The manager has previously enjoyed two wins and two draws over PSV in the group stages of the competition, but described it as a "tough draw".
