Fermanagh 0-19 Meath 2-12: For the second year in a row Meath have been knocked out of the All-Ireland Championship by Fermanagh.
Last year, at Clones, they lost by a six-point margin; this time the issue was decided after extra-time, at the end of which Meath manager Seán Boylan cited a number of missed chances and the withdrawal through injury of full forward Shane McKeague in the 50th minute as reasons for the defeat.
That, however, didn't account for Fermanagh's blistering start. After 21 minutes they were coasting, leading by 0-7 to 0-2.
Their dominance, though, was thwarted somewhat when Meath's Daithi Regan scored the first of his two goals in the half.
The first goal lifted Meath, as did the introduction of Ollie Murphy in the 29th minute. As a result, Trevor Giles was able to move out of defence and take up a position on the 40, having been outplayed by Mark Little. And thanks to Regan's second goal, in the 31st minute, Meath enjoyed a half-time lead of 2-4 to 0-8.
At the end of the third quarter Fermanagh edged in front with points from James Sherry, Eamonn Maguire and Colm Bradley (0-13 to 2-6).
The northern side were now on top, dominating midfield, where captain Shane McDermott had moved into McBarron's spot. That advantage was nullified, however, when Niall Kelly, who had come on in the 56th minute, was moved to that sector.
There were missed chances galore in this half, particularly by Regan and Joe Sheridan from frees. Sheridan fluffed a golden opportunity three minutes over time in the half to widen Meath's one-point advantage and Boylan's side were duly penalised when Enniskillen player Bradley sent over a sideline ball to force the issue into extra-time.
Meath continued to miss chances in the first period, at the end of which Fermanagh led by a single point, 0-18 to 2-11.
At the start of the second period, Murphy was through for a goal but his effort was well blocked by goalkeeper Niall Tinney and it was Fermanagh who went two points ahead when a foul on Little was penalised by Bradley with four minutes left. Both sides had more chances but in the end only one score was recorded, a Giles 45.
