Motor racing history will be made on Sunday when for the first time since Mondello Park opened in 1968, a Ferrari will be raced on the Co Kildare circuit.

The last time a Ferrari was raced in Co Kildare was back in 1954 when the late Joe Kelly drove a Ferrari 750 Monza sports car in the Curragh Short Circuit races.

The red Ferrari Formula One car to be driven by Dutch driver Klass Zwart is the glorious sounding V12 raced by Gerhard Berger in 1995. Zwart competes in the Irish Superprix which is a round of the EuroBOSS series for ex-Grand Prix cars.

This feature attraction will take place over two 15-lap races, and the impressive line-up will include such famous Formula One makes as Jordan, Benetton and Tyrrell.

Tony Worswick is a previous Mondello winner and will start as one of the favourites at the wheel of a Jordan, challenged by Dave Shelton in the ex-Michael Schumacher Benetton, Zwart in the Ferrari and Earl Goddard, who has fitted a 4-litre V10 engine and F1 brakes to a Formula 3000 chassis. Shelton narrowly beat Zwart in the recent Boss race at Brands Hatch.

As well as the Jordan, Irish interest will be centred on Sarah Kavanagh (Dublin) in an ex-F1 Jordan and Noel McIntyre (Mullingar).

Some 20 powerful cars are expected to line up for the Superprix. Spectators should note that Race One is scheduled to start at 2.0 p.m. after the Pits Walkabout (1.0 p.m.) and the Fiat Punto race (1.30 p.m.). Race Two will be in mid-afternoon, following the Formula Vee qualifier and Stryker sports car race. The programme will close with races for Fiat Uno, Formula Vee Final and Historic Sports cars.

Austin McHale and Brian Murphy compete in Poland this weekend in preparation for the Polski Rally on June 7th-9th.

In lieu of the foot-and-mouth restrictions, the National Rally Championship Committee in association with Motorsport Ireland have announced the cancellation of the Dunlop National Stages Championship.
