HAVING devoted 13 weekends of the summer to earn ding places in Ireland's squad for the World Cup qualifying tournament in Cagliari in a fortnight's time, it is unlikely that the players will over stretch themselves in the final tune up matches at Blaris against Wales tomorrow and Scotland on Sunday.

Possibly, the most vigorous effort will come from Wales, who showed admirable spirit in finishing seventh in the European Championship in Dublin last year. The Welsh are not in Ireland's group in Sardinia whereas the Irish and Scots clash in a Pool B opener on September 29th.

While lowly ranked Scotland were pleased with their 1-1 draw with Ireland in last month's Edinburgh tri nations tournament, Sunday's match is bound to be an equally cagey affair. Priorities for Irish coach Cees Koppelaar will be to get the reshaped midfield sector functioning strongly around Robbie Taylor and, with the abolition of offside, to exact maximum dividends from the front runners.

The home attendance would particularly enjoy a cavalier performance by Daniel Clarke, who had the distinction of notching four goals against one of Holland's most prestigious club sides, HGC, in last week's training excursion.

Attractive attacking play is also expected in Dublin this weekend when Three Rock Rovers stage their 10th Budweiser sponsored Super Cup tournament. The lineup includes Havant, the trophy holders, and Scottish champions Grange and although the national squad members will be missing, the Irish challenge should not be taken lightly.

Instonians, the all Ireland champions, are bound to be competitive while Three Rock themselves might bid for the honours this time. The Leinster title holders will be without Angus Dunlop, who is taking the season off for cricket commitments, but Rovers appear to have a valuable recruit in Bundesliga player Matheas Bechman, brother of German star Andreas.
