Antarctic Wind took the £15,000 Elan Midlands National Handicap Chase, the main event of the season at Kilbeggan, in front of a large crowd at the ever popular midlands venue.

The Jessica Harrington-trained gelding led after halfway under Kieran Kelly, and stayed on really well to beat favourite Triptodicks by nine lengths. "He has recovered well from a fracture of the pelvis in February and we may go next for the Galway Blazers Handicap Chase at Ballybrit," said the Moone handler .

Barry Geraghty holds the early lead in the jump riders' championship, and the Meath pilot moved onto the 10-winner mark for the season when Camlin Gale made virtually all in the Tom McCormack Memorial Cup Maiden Hurdle.

The six-year-old gelding is certainly suitably bred, being by Strong Gale out of the top-class racemare Grabel, and winning trainer Noel Meade said afterwards: "He is a backward type, and likes fast ground."

Deirdres Pet, having her first outing since suspended for 42 days after a running and riding inquiry at Roscommon in May, took the opening Nifedipine Er Maiden Hurdle. This success provided Athenry permit-holder Iggy Madden, who only has four in training, with his second winner in just over 24 hours after the victory of Ten Four at Killarney.
