THE IRISH women’s team made a strong start to their 11-week US training camp, beating W-League hosts FC Indiana 2-1 yesterday despite a slow start in the blistering heat.

With a string of internationals of their own, the locals dominated the early stages but couldn’t make the breakthrough. Noel King’s side gradually got on top and took the lead thanks to a deflected Fiona O’Sullivan shot.

The 22-year-old got Ireland’s second from the penalty spot after being brought down inside the box following a good pass by Stephanie Roche.

Indiana pulled one back moments later but the Irish held on well for the win. “In a camp like this winning matches is not essential,” King said, “but I would be lying if I said tonight’s result didn’t give everyone in the squad immense satisfaction and a huge lift.”
