Tennis: Tim Henman brushed aside Dominik Hrbaty in Brighton yesterday to finally wrap up his first tournament win on home soil.

Henman broke the Slovak's serve in the first game of the Samsung Open final and took just 84 minutes to win the sixth ATP Tour title of his career and his second in less than a month after victory in Vienna.

Before Brighton, Henman had failed to notch a single win in three tour events on home soil this year. He had been dumped out at the first stage in Nottingham, Docklands and Queen's.

Henman, who picked up £39,000 and a camcorder for his win, said: "I knew I had to play to the best of my capabilities if I was going to win and that's exactly what I did."

Cycling: The long-running feud between Irish Cycling Federation chief Mick Lawless and his board reached endpoint on Saturday afternoon with Lawless' resignation.

It was, as threatened, a stormy a.g.m in the Grand Hotel, Malahide. Things had not been well all year within Kelly Roche house.

Yet, despite the frustration, the five members of the board up for re-election were successful - Ciaran McKenna (PRO), Maurice Murphy (sporting committee chairman), Peter Thornton (treasurer), Jack Watson (secretary) and Sean O'Callaghan (underage committee chairman).

Remaining unswayed in the face of pleas to continue, Lawless' resignation clears the way for the remaining nine board members to co-opt a new president within the next fortnight. Also required is a replacement for outgoing national team director Richie Beatty.

Cricket: Australian captain Steve Waugh has dismissed suggestions that his side have had an easy ride in equalling the record for successive Test victories.

After beating international minnows Zimbabwe in Harare, the Aussies reeled off six home wins against proven poor travellers Pakistan and India.

A hat-trick of successes in New Zealand cannot be faulted, but they could hardly have wished for more out-of-sorts opponents than the West Indies, whom they defeated by an innings and 126 runs on Saturday, for their 11th straight win in Brisbane this weekend.
