The table below is an indication of the number of games that the Ireland international squad - this includes the A squad - will play in the three seasons leading up to the 2003 World Cup.

The IRFU's director of fitness Liam Hennessy, in conjunction with the union, is keen to limit the number of matches in which an international player will participate during the season.

No club games have been included because, quite simply, the totals listed are roughly about the maximum number of matches that the international players should play in a season.

The IRFU conducted a survey to examine how much more is being asked of the professional international rugby player in the modern game. In summarising the findings they suggest that:

1. Players sprint further to support the ball.

2. Players run for a longer period of time during a game (+ 30 per cent).

3. Players collide more frequently (+ 40 per cent).

4. Players are heavier, more muscular, stronger, more powerful, faster and possess greater endurance.
