The misfortunes of Myles Byrne, Ian Woosnam's former caddie, have spawned a spate of tales from Firestone's caddieshack this week. One of them concerned David Toms, the newly-crowned USPGA champion and was prompted by his hole in one at Atlanta last Saturday, the sixth ace of his career.
Toms recalled that when competing in a Nike Tour event in Monterrey, Mexico, he had a caddie who was "not all that great." He went on: "When we got to the short 15th, he wanted me to hit a six iron. I thought it was a five iron and that's what I eventually pulled.
"As I was preparing to hit the shot, the caddie was mumbling to one of the other caddies and said 'If he (Toms) listened to me, he'd be winning this golf tournament.' After holing in one with the five iron, I turned around and looked at him. I fired him at the end of the round."
