CANOEING: LIFFEY DESCENT:NEIL FLEMING and Peter Egan, who will represent Ireland at the Canoe Marathon World Championships in Singapore next week, gave themselves a great going-away present by winning the Liffey Descent on Saturday in a K2 racing kayak.

It was the third leg of a treble this year for the in-form pair, who also won the Irish and British marathon championships.

Their time, in wonderful sunny conditions on Saturday, was a remarkable five minutes and 53 seconds faster than second-placed Graham O’Regan and Jonathan Boyton of London’s Royal Canoe Club.

Egan (32) and Fleming (27) negotiated the 28.2 kilometre course from Straffan to Islandbridge at the head of the 800-strong field without any major snags. “It was the perfect preparation for Singapore,” said Fleming.
