St Peter's College held off a committed second-half challenge from Cistercian College to gain a deserved four-point victory in this Leinster Colleges A senior hurling championship game at Power Park, Wexford, yesterday.
St Peter's played their best hurling in the opening 30 minutes, with corner forward Darren Foran particularly impressive as he picked off four excellent points to help his side to a 0-6 to 0-2 lead. However, the crucial score arrived in the 30th minute when a speculative long-range shot from midfielder Darren Colfer found the net.
Although the Roscrea boys improved immensely on the resumption they were unable to penetrate a strong home side's defence in which centre back Liam Goff was impressive. St Peter's still held a 1-9 to 0-5 lead when the visitors scored a goal from full-forward Conor Phelan, one of the best forwards on view, two minutes from the end.
