Wales Open: Scotland's Alastair Forsyth emerged from the fog and burst to the top of the leaderboard in the Wales Open at Celtic Manor today.

After yesterday's two-hour rain delay play was held up for 105 more minutes at the start of the second round because the visibility was not good enough on several holes.

When the tournament did resume Forsyth, whose only victory in over 200 European Tour events came in Malaysia five years ago, went to the turn in a five under par 30 to reach eight under par.

The 31-year-old birdied the second, eagled the long third, then picked up more shots on the fourth and ninth to lead compatriot Gary Orr and England's Paul Broadhurst by one shot.

Orr and Broadhurst had been part of a European Tour record nine-way tie for the lead overnight and when they set off again Orr, playing in the group behind Forsyth, had a hat-trick of birdies from the third while Broadhurst birdied the 12th, 13th and par five 16th.

Colin Montgomerie resumed today on one over and not even in the top 80, but he was also only five off the lead and three successive birdies from the 15th lifted him to two under and up 50 places.

Peter Lawrie heads the five strong Irish contingent at Celtic Manor, which also includes Gary Murphy, Damien McGrane, Graeme McDowell  and Simon Thornton.

Lawrie is currently four off Forsyth's lead.
