THE GALWAY hurling board have set this Friday at midnight as the deadline for club nominations for their new manager, to succeed Ger Loughnane, who lost a narrow vote to be ratified for a third year in charge, writes Ian O'Riordan

A selection committee, comprising county chairman Gerry Larkin, hurling board chairman Miko Ryan and secretary John Fahey, was set up to select the manager. Following Friday's closing date, interviews will be held before the committee put their recommendation to the board, probably in a fortnight.

Luke Dempsey has been nominated by the Carlow County Board executive to replace ex-Dublin star Paul Bealin as the new county football manager.

The former Carlow footballer, a star player in the 1970s, has managed Westmeath and Longford and was the front-runner in the Meath managerial race until last Monday week when he stunned Royal County fans by withdrawing.

Dempsey managed Carlow for a brief spell in 2004 when he led them to a 4-16 to 1-15 trashing of Longford in Leinster before losing to Laois in the quarter-final.

The death has occurred of Dinny Donnelly, who was right corner back on the Meath team which lost to Galway in the 1966 All-Ireland senior football final. He filled the same position and was captain for the Leinster title success in 1964.

The Kilmessan dual-performer also played intercounty hurling for a number of years and was one of the joint winners of the national poc fada competition in 1963, with Kilkenny's Ollie Walsh and Tom Geary of Waterford. Last Sunday, sons David and Paul were part of the Kilmessan side which won the Meath senior hurling final.
