Colleagues may be less-inclined to criticise Jim Furyk as an under-achiever, after his one-stroke triumph over Rory Sabbatini in the Mercedes Championship, the opening event of the new season on the US Tour.
For this, his sixth win on the American tour, Furyk was rewarded with a cheque for $630,000 after a closing 67 for 274 - 18-under-par.
He also had the perfect answer for those who criticised his absence from the Accenture World Matchplay Championship in Melbourne.
As it happened, his appearance at Kapalua was his first competitive outing in two months, partially because of a damaged right wrist.
With his driver out, ready to go back to the 18th tee for a sudden-death play-off, the 30year-old clearly expected Sabbatini to hole a three-foot birdie putt on the last. But the South African missed.
"I'd like to have won with a more heroic finish," said Furyk. "I feel for Rory. It's a pretty sick feeling."
This was Furyk's third tournament victory in Hawaii, including an unofficial event at Kapalua.
Meanwhile, defending champion Tiger Woods had to settle for a share of eighth place and a cheque for $99,000 after a final round of 69 for an aggregate of 280.
"There was a little bit of rust showing at times," said Woods, who has now gone four American events without winning.
