Donaghy injured playing for Stacks

Just when Kerry boss Pat O'Shea thought he had a fully fit squad, Kieran Donaghy has become the second high-profile player to pick up an knee injury in seven days following a knock taken by Séamus Scanlon last weekend.

Kerry supporters will be waiting anxiously to see what the results of a scan will reveal on a injury picked by Kieran Donaghy two minutes before half-time when playing with his club Austin Stacks against Dingle in the County League.

Agony for Armagh once again

Cork's Martin Finn scored 14 points in London's 2-23 to 4-16 victory over Armagh in a thrilling Ulster SHC quarter-final in Newry on Saturday.

Armagh scored three goals in the first half - through Conor McCann, Fiachra Bradley and star player Declan Coulter - and they led by six at the interval, 3-10 to 13 points.

However, London hit back, with Kevin McMullan and Chris McDonnell both scoring goals. John Corvan scored another for Armagh, but Finn stepped up to score the last, winning point for London.

SCORERS

London: M Finn 0-14 (eight frees, three 65s); C McDonnell 1-1; S Quinn 0-3; K McMullan 1-0; C O'Halloran 0-2; T Abernethy, J McCarthy, M Mythen 0-1. Armagh: D Coulter 1-10 (six frees); C McCann 1-1; F Bradley, J Corvan 1-0 each; G Enright 0-2; P McArdle, C McAlinden, C Carville 0-1 each.

Monaghan have no answer

Who'd be a goalkeeper? Of Derrys seven goals at Celtic Park in the Ulster senior hurling championship quarter-final last night, Monaghan goalkeeper Michael McHugh dropped one and use his stick to put two others in the back of his own net as the Farney were brought back to earth at Celtic Park.

There were a total of 46 scores in the 70 minutes of play, with Derry winning, 7-23 to 3-13.

But that merely papers over the cracks, as Derry boss Brian McGilligan admitted after the match as he now prepares his side for a semi-final for Antrim.

That wasnt really a game, it was more like a training session. Definitely not (happy with the performance). All the old bad habits that the boys had came back, standing back and waiting for things to happen."

SCORERS

Derry: P Henry 2-3 (goal from free); R Convery 1-6 (0-2 from frees); K Hinphey 0-4; M Craig, O McCloskey 1-1 each; S Dodds, P McCloskey 1-0 each; SL McGoldrick, M Kirkpatrick 0-2 each; S Henry, D Brunton 0-1 each. Monaghan: S Lambe 1-6 (0-5 from frees); B McGuigan 1-1; R Conlan 1-0; B O'Brien 0-2 (frees); P OConnell, M Dolan, D Crowe 0-1 each.

Clarke stars

Down's Martin Clarke produced a man of the match performance as Collingwood registered a 134-48 victory over Geelong in their AFL clash at the weekend.

And Cork's Setanta Ó hÁilpín was part of Carlton's thrilling nine-point - 14-13 (97) to 14.4 (88) - victory over Fremantle at Telstra Dome on Saturday afternoon.

Hurlers are made to wait

GAA Ulster Council official Martin McAviney has revealed he had to apologise to both teams involved in Saturday's hurling quarter-final in Newry over a 40-minute delay to the start of the game.

Armagh's clash with London had to be put back due to a Down versus Cork senior football friendly.

"It shouldn't have happened and we apologised to both teams," said McAviney. Both sets of hurlers had to wait around outside the clubhouse for dressingrooms to become available at Páirc Esler.

Cork won the game 2-15 to 1-15.

Limerick set up date with Cork

Limerick advanced to the Munster JFC semi-final showdown with Cork after edging past Tipperary, 0-13 to 0-11, yesterday in Fermoy.

Trevor Cosgrove, former senior captain Johnny Murphy and the wonderfully-named Jimmy Barry Murphy were the scoring heroes for Limerick as they chipped in with a combined tally of 10 points.

Limerick led by 0-9 to 0-6 at half-time, and never relinquished that lead, but they did have to survive two second-half goal scares as Tipperary centre forward Niall Fitzgerald twice went close.

SCORERS

Limerick: JB Murphy 0-4 (two frees); T Cosgrove, J Murphy (two frees) 0-3 each; J O'Connell 0-2; S Garvey 0-1. Tipperary: T Doyle 0-7 (six frees); O Lloyd, A Fitzgerald 0-2 each.
