Late, late show by Monaghan

THERE WAS a thrilling finish to the Ulster senior hurling championship game at Kingspan Breffni Park yesterday when Monaghan grabbed victory by 2-15 to 1-16 in the face of a spirited display by Cavan.

Cavan had gone into the game as underdogs, but were within sight of victory when they led by 1-16 to 1-13 at the end of normal time.

The game took a dramatic turn when referee Declan Magee from Down deemed that four minutes of additional time was to be added, and it was in this period that Monaghan produced their great escape.

Corner forward Michael Greaney shot through a group of players to the net in the 75th minute for the vital match-winning score.

Kielt runs the show for Derry

KAREN KIELT produced a quite sensational individual performance as Derry captured a third successive All-Ireland Under-16 B camogie title in Ashbourne yesterday.

The Kilrea starlet bagged an incredible individual haul of 2-13 as the Oak Leaf County ran out comprehensive 6-18 to 0-6 winners against outclassed Offaly.

In the Minor B championship on Saturday, there were wins for Offaly, Down and Waterford against Meath, Armagh and Laois respectively.

In the Under-16 A championship, Tipp defeated Limerick 3-13 to 1-10 while Cork ran out 2-19 to 2-10 victors against Galway.

In the minor A championship yesterday, Clare defeated Cork by 1-8 to 0-6 in a game which doubled up as the Munster minor decider.

And in the junior championship, Westmeath enjoyed a 5-8 to 1-9 victory against Carlow.

Tipperary preserve record in fiery encounter

NHL CHAMPIONS Tipperary preserved their unbeaten record in 2008 with a 2-18 to 2-12 victory over Munster rivals Limerick last night.

A fiercely-contested challenge game marked the official opening of the new stand and facilities at the Knockavilla-Donaskeigh Kickhams GAA club and 2,000 spectators witnessed a fiery encounter.

Referee Paddy Russell was kept on his toes throughout and brandished seven yellow cards during the game, five for Limerick and two for the home side, as a number of minor off-the-ball skirmishes punctuated proceedings.

Tipp, who are preparing for a showdown with Cork on June 8th, led by 1-11 to 1-7 at half-time.

Tyrone edge past Fermanagh

The Ulster senior hurling championship first round game at Lisnaskea went to the wire yesterday with Tyrone winning 1-11 to 2-7, despite Fermanagh's 17-year-old corner forward Seán Corrigan marking his debut with a goal in injury-time.

Tyrone played the entire second half a man short, but managed to get scores at vital moments. Their final score, a David Lavery point shortly before Corrigan's goal, ensured a home meeting with London next weekend.

Farrell returns as Meath defeat Mayo

Brian Farrell returned for Meath for his outing with the county in 2008 as Mayo were outscored by 2-17 to 0-16 in a lively senior football challenge game to mark the official opening yesterday of Dunderry's new GAA clubhouse.
