A STRONG second-half performance saw Monaghan take a comfortable 0-14 to 0-6 victory against St Mary’s College, Belfast, in Clones yesterday .
Monaghan led at half-time by just 0-4 to 0-3 and points from Matthew McKenna and Owen Duffy had them four ahead entering the final 10 minutes of normal time.
While St Mary’s brought that tally down to three with a brilliant free-kick conversion by substitute Emmet Bradley, the county side finished much the stronger with Paul Finlay registering three points, one from a free, and one each by Stephen Gollogly and James Turley to wrap up victory with something to spare.
DONEGAL suffered a shock defeat when they fell against the students of Jordanstown at O’Donnell Park, Letterkenny, by 0-11 to 0-9.
Thanks to a late scoring spurt from CJ McGourty, Jordanstown were worthy winners as Donegal failed to take their chances in the second half.
Kieran Hughes caused Donegal plenty of problems in the opening half as UUJ took the lead on five occasions, but each time Donegal levelled to leave the sides locked at 0-5 each at the break.
Patrick McBrearty, introduced at half-time, pushed Donegal two clear early in the second half but they were unable to build on that as UUJ kept plugging away and once McGourty found the range and fired over four points in the final quarter the issue had been decided in the students’ favour.
