Staunton inspires Mayo

A controversial goal by Cora Staunton propelled Mayo to a 2-13 to 2-8 victory over Tyrone at Breffni Park on Saturday.

Tyrone were very disappointed with the penalty decision, awarded by Tony Clarke five minutes before half-time. Staunton's shot went straight at Elaine Mallaghan but the Carnacon attacker sent the rebound to the net. Mallaghan was then sin-binned after an altercation with Staunton.

Tyrone scored two points to restore parity at the break on 1-5 apiece, their earlier goal coming from Eilish Gormley.

Mayo went in front when substitute Diane O'Hora scored a goal immediately after the resumption when fed by Noelle Tierney. They were eased to victory by Staunton, who finished with a tally of 1-8.

Earlier, three second-half goals helped Leitrim secure a 3-7 to 2-9 victory over Clare. Michelle Reynolds began the spree with a powerful shot to the corner of the net in the 34th minute but when Majella Griffin scored at the other end 10 minutes later, Clare led 1-7 to 1-6.

Leitrim's riposte was instant. Reynolds scored her second goal, winning the ball close to the sideline before rounding her marker and firing an unstoppable shot. Within seconds Eileen Donoghue pounced on a friendly rebound and suddenly Leitrim were five points clear.

Sevens win for Sarsfields

Sarsfields of Cork collected their second Kilmacud Crokes Senior hurling sevens title when defeating Kilmacud Crokes by 4-15 to 3-5 at Glenalbyn on Saturday.

Crokes, who were contesting their first decider in the 38th staging of this contest, were playing catch-up from an early stage: Kieran Murphy and Pat Barry posted goals as Sarsfields registered 2-6 without reply nine minutes into the first half.

Murphy netted his second to leave it 3-8 to 0-4 at the break. And although Brian Motherway beat Sarsfields goal keeper, Alan Kennedy shortly after the restart, the Cork side pulled away with John Murphy and Tadgh Murphy sending over a series of scores from midfield.
