Underdogs Aughawillan shocked outgoing champions St Mary's when they deservedly won the Leitrim Senior Football Championship before a crowd of 4,000 at Pairc Seán MhicDiarmada in Carrick-on-Shannon.

Mark Plunkett set the tone, opening the Aughawillan account on two minutes.

An early exchange of points gave Mary’s a slender lead at the halfway stage but the remainder of the half belonged to the ‘Willies as they scored seven points to Mary’s one, deservedly leading 0-9 to 0-4 at the break.

Aughawillan extended their lead with a further two points on the resumption but a Robbie Lowe goal in the 37th minute gave Mary’s some hope.

However, Aughawillan responded with two further points by the Plunkett brothers, Gary and Mark, but when Ray Mulvey raced through to score an excellent point for Mary’s it signalled a purple patch for the champions and they scored three further points without reply to set up an exciting finale.

Aughawillan, however, remained steadfast and clinched victory with a penalty goal in the 60th minute by Seán Flanagan.
