Corofin set up Galway SFC final clash with Mountbellew-Moylough

Both sides claimed deserved wins in their semi-final ties this afternoon

Corofin 2-11 Cortoon Shamrocks 0-7

All Ireland club champions Corofin cruised to a convincing Galway SFC semi-final win over Cortoon Shamrocks at Tuam Stadium.

Inspired by two excellent Gary Sice goals Corofin were never seriously troubled by Cortoon in the second half.

Underdogs Cortoon Shamrocks had wasted several opening period scoring opportunities as Corofin departed 1-4 to 0-4 ahead at the interval.

Cortoon only converted four from 13 chances before the break as Gary Sice’s blistering 29th minute goal ensured holders Corofin edged in front.

Kieran McGrath’s pass enabled Sice to dash clear to rattle the Cortoon net.

Greg Higgins made an instant impact at centrefield for Corofin kicking two delightful points as Stephen Rochford’s team seized control.

In the closing stages Sice decorated Corofin’s emphatic success with a 56th minute goal as Cortoon were easily defeated.

Mountbellew-Moylough 1-12 Salthill-Knocknacarra 1-7

A promising Mountbellew-Moylough outfit claimed a deserved Galway SFC semi-final win over Salthill-Knocknacarra at Tuam Stadium.

Val Daly was in charge of a Salthill-Knocknacarra side that were soundly beaten by a Mountbellew-Moylough panel featuring his two sons, Michael and John.

Mountbellew-Moylough impressed during the opening period eventually going in at the break armed with a 1-6 to 1-2 advantage.

Eoin Finnerty, Joe Bergin, and Cathal Kenny registered early scores for Mountbellew-Moylough, but Salthill-Knocknacarra improved as a point from Eoin O’Mahony was followed by an 11th minute Marcus MacDonnachadha goal.

Deep into first half stoppage time Eoin Finnerty grabbed an opportunistic major for Mountbellew-Moylough, who led at the break by four.

Kenny and Finnerty added further scores for Mountbellew-Moylough immediately after the restart as Salthill-Knocknacarra were under significant pressure.

Shane Maughan was prominent for Salthill-Knocknacarra, who narrowed the gap down to three, but late scores from Barry McHugh and Cathal Duffy sealed Mountbellew-Moylough’s victory.
