UCD 1-19 GMIT 1-9

Dublin’s Jack McCaffrey delivered another peerless display to secure UCD a mouth-watering Sigerson Cup semi-final derby date with DCU.

The in-form Dublin defender continued in attack for UCD and was simply unstoppable, scoring two points and setting up much more for his colleagues.

He was also involved in the flowing 14th minute move that ended in Longford’s Mark Hughes palming the ball to the net from close range.

That goal put the hosts 1-6 to 0-1 up and though GMIT responded with an Andy Glennon goal it was generally one -way traffic at Belfield.

GMIT were significantly weakened by the omission of four Corofin players due to tomorrow’s AIB All-Ireland club semi-final tie against holders St Vincent’s from Dublin.

UCD established a 1-11 to 1-2 lead by the interval and with speedy McCaffrey consistently piercing GMIT’s defence after the restart, they eased 1-16 to 1-3 clear with 10 minutes remaining.

Aside from McCaffrey, Westmeath’s John Heslin and Kildare’s Niall Kelly contributed 0-10 between them to secure UCD’s place at the finals weekend in Cork.
