Monaghan minor footballers remain on course for a first All-Ireland final appearance in 74 years after they defeated Tipperary in the quarter-final at Pearse Park yesterday.
Conor McCarthy and Ferghal McMahon both hit four points for Frank Brady’s side who now go on to meet Connacht champions Mayo in the semi-final.
The Ulster champions had the impressive Michael O’Dowd sent off in injury-time on a second yellow card, but Tipp were left to rue their inability to build on a classy first 10 minutes when they kicked four of their nine points.
And after electing to play into the teeth of the stiff breeze Brady would have been thrilled to see his side trail by just 0-5 to 0-4 at half-time.
Tipp held a 0-4 to 0-1 lead by the 10th minute, but Monaghan took over from there and held the Premier to just one further point in the half and trimmed the deficit to just one at the break.
Like their opponents, Monaghan started well with the wind at their backs and hit three unanswered points, which saw them open out a two-point lead by the 40th minute.
Tipperary displayed the steel that got them to a third consecutive Munster final with two points of their own on the spin to draw level at 0-7 each.
But that was as close as they got as Monaghan hit five of the next six points and substitute Adam Treanor made sure of the win with a terrific point from distance six minutes into injury-time.
