UCD too strong for Wexford

Students control game in dreadful conditions

UCD 2-12 Wexford 3-3

UCD playing with more composure in the dreadful condition emerged with a comfortable six point victory over Wexford in this O'Byrne Cup senior football game played at rain swept St Patrick's Park, Enniscorthy, yesterday evening.

The Dublin College controlled the opening ten minutes at the end of which they led 1-3 to 0-1, with Ros Bergin finding home their goal from close range after ten minutes. The homeside were struggling to get into the game only managing two first half points through Ciaran Lyng which left them trailing 1-5 to 0-2 at the interval.

With Wexford unable to make any real impression in attack, UCD continued to control the pattern of play and with Conor Downey kicking over three points followed by a Liam Connerton fifty-third minute goal they moved into a 2-8 to 0-3 lead.

Wexford, fielding a much changed outfit from that which defeated Laoid, came much more into the game during the closing fifteen minutes. Two goals in a four minute spell from Ciaran Lyng after fifty-five and fifty-nine minutes reduced the deficit to 2-8 to 2-3. Points from Ross Bergin and Shane McEntee restored the UCD control, although Wexford finished with a Ciaran Lyng goal in the closing minute but it was too little to affect the result.
