Former Dublin midfielder has been appointed to Ireland’s International Rules backroom team as one of three selectors to work alongside manager Paul Earley.
Whelan will join Tony Scullion, the former Derry dual player, and Tipperary’s Séamus McCarthy on the sidelines for October’s two-match series against the Australians.
Nicholas Walsh has also been appointed as conditioning coach.
“We are delighted to have such an experienced and enthusiastic management team in place and the selectors and backroom team will complement the very obvious skill-set that Paul will bring to the role as team manager,” GAA president Liam O’Neil said this afternoon.
O’Neill also confirmed that both tests will be broadcast live on TG4.
