Beaten All-Ireland finalists Cork will be reinstated to Division One of the Allianz Hurling League if a proposal to restructure the competition from next season is carried by GAA Central Council on Saturday week.

The GAA today announced that after a meeting of the management committee to discuss the structure of the league, it was decided an alternative option to the one put in place last year should be considered for 2014.

The current format includes six teams in Divisions 1A and 1B, but the proposed change would see the top tier increased to eight teams, which would reinstate Cork after they were relegated during the 2013 campaign and promote Limerick after they lost the 1B final by a point to Dublin on April 6th.

Division 1A, therefore, would include Tipperary, Kilkenny, Galway, Waterford, Clare, Dublin, Cork and Limerick, while Offaly, Wexford, Antrim, Carlow, Laois and Westmeath would contest Division 1B.

The proposed changes would also do away with the quarter-final stages.

Division 1A would see each team play seven rounds before the top three enter a semi-final phase along with the winner of the 1B final, who automatically gain promotion.

The eighth place team would be automatically relegated to 1B, while the team in seventh would play a promotion/relegation play-off with the loser of the 1B final.

In Division 1B, there would be five rounds before the top four teams enter the semi-final stage. The team that finishes bottom would be relegated to 2A.

In the lower divisions, the top two teams would contest a final for one promotion place and the bottom sides would be relegated.
