Limerick manager Brian Ryan was left with mixed emotions at the end of yesterday’s Electric Ireland Munster minor final.
Naturally relieved that the young Shannonsiders had come from eight points down to salvage a draw he was also a little aggrieved that they didn’t snatch it at the death.
Limerick trailed by 0-16 to 2-18 with ten minutes remaining but sub Tom Morrissey sparked the fightback. He scored a point before leading scorer Ronan Lynch hammered home a goal from a 20-metre free. And in the final minute, Morrissey popped up with the priceless equaliser to secure a replay on July 23.
It was a remarkable end to a game that really burst into life towards the finish.
Waterford boss Sean Power reflected: “They were always going to come back at us. They’re a good hurling team. We’re disappointed with the position that we were in with a couple of minutes to go not to win it but we’re still in this.”
The first provincial minor final between the counties since 1958 had a dramatic end but Waterford looked good for victory, and a first provincial crown since 2009, when Stephen Bennett, who missed a first-half penalty, and Micheál Harney scored second-half goals.
Home manager Brian Ryan admitted: “Of course we are happy. This was only our second championship game and our lads will benefit hugely from that. I’m delighted, given the character they showed in the last ten minutes. And we could have taken it with the last puck of the game.”
Ronan Lynch had a chance to snatch the win but pulled his shot wide.
