FR Manning Gaels won the Longford football title for the second year on the trot when they proved too strong for Longford Slashers in what was a generally poor final, played in front of a 5,000 attendance at Pearse Park.

Slashers started well and held a slender 0-2 to 0-1 lead midway through the first half, but the Gaels then clicked into top gear to score six points without reply.

The title holders led by 0-7 to 04 at the break and further points from Padraig Davis (who received the man of the match award), Colin Hannify and James Breslin in the early stages of the second half put them well on the road to victory.

Slashers tried hard to get back into the game, but with Eamonn Wall failing to convert a couple of clear-cut goal chances, one of which hit a post, their hopes of staging a dramatic comeback were well and truly dashed.
