Francie Barrett remained in contention for the light welter crown in the National Senior Boxing Championships at the National Stadium on Saturday with a convincing win over James Galvin. Barrett rid himself of the slack performance that marred his first-round win by going up a gear to overwhelm Galvin of Moate 19-2 in a one-sided quarter final.
"I could have stopped him but I just wanted to keep piling up the points," said a pleased Barrett afterwards. Galvin, a younger brother of former international Denis, took three standing counts of eight.
Barrett now meets Ulsterman Paul McCloskey, the reigning light champion, next Friday. McCloskey put paid to Glen Stephen's chances of realising a dream comeback after three years when scoring 13-5 over the Crumlin man. The Sligo brothers Alan and Stephen Reynolds advanced in their respective light heavy and heavy quarter-finals.
Sadie Duffy of Donegal created a piece of history when becoming the first woman to referee a national senior bout.
