CONNACHT SFC SEMI-FINAL Galway v SligoVenue Pearse Stadium Throw-in 2pm Sunday On TV TV3
IT WOULDN’T be quite true to say that Sligo were unfazed by their favouritism against Mayo, as they started very badly with Alan Freeman ripping the defensive cover apart to build an early lead for the defending champions.
But their resilience and adaptability slowly reversed that momentum and established a stranglehold Mayo couldn’t break.
Trouble for Galway tomorrow may well start at centrefield where the county has struggled effectively since Sligo manager Kevin Walsh was playing for them.
Stephen Gilmartin has been one of the most improved players in the country this season, progressing from the bench in NUIG’s Sigerson campaign to a vital force in Sligo’s recent triumphs.
The issue for Sligo is how effectively they continue to protect the central defensive corridor, as they did so well against Mayo with the wing backs covering in and Eamonn O’Hara dropping back. Pádraic Joyce is likely to handle the situation with more strategic aplomb and Seán Armstrong had a crucial impact last year.
Sligo will be buoyant after their achievements to date and Galway warned, but the home team also have the formidable back-up of Michael Meehan on the bench for likely introduction at some stage.
In the last episode: Last year Galway were steeped to get away with victory after the home side hunted down their lead in the closing minutes and it took an injury-time goal from Seán Armstrong to kill off the match. Three years ago Galway didn't manage to pull it out of the fire in the Connacht final, leaving Sligo to pick up an historic third provincial title and a first in 32 years.
You bet: Galway 8 to 13, Sligo 7 to 4 and 16 to 1 the draw (70 minutes).
On your marks: Both Gary Sice and Joe Bergin are essentially improvised wing forwards but both can make a big impact for Galway by tying down the Sligo wing backs and shadowing any fire brigade work by their direct opponents.
Gaining ground: The counties last played in Salthill four years ago . Michael Meehan ran riot against Sligo but Galway were still pushed all the way to the final whistle.
Just the ticket: Terrace €20 and stand €30.
Crystal gazing: Galway narrowly.
