Galway United won the National League First Division Shield when they defeated Limerick FC in a thrilling, extra-time encounter at Terryland Park last night before a crowd of 1,100.
Galway were greatly aided when the Limerick goalkeeper, Eddie Hickey, was sent off in the 78th minute for handling the ball outside the area. Albert Finnan, the Limerick captain, went into goal.
United pressed forward, but the first score didn't come until five minutes into extra time when Herrick knocked in a rebound after Finnan had saved a header from O'Neill.
United sealed their success in the 102nd minute when Derek Rodgers floated in a cross which was met by Fergal Coleman, who scored his eighth goal of the season to ensure the silverware for the home team.
