ALL-IRELAND MHC QUARTER-FINAL Galway 1-15 Waterford 2-8:GALWAY WITHSTOOD a brave second-half rally from Waterford to book their place in the semi-finals at Croke Park yesterday.

The beaten Munster finalists got off the mark first with a point from Eamonn Murphy but Galway had four points on the board in response by the fifth minute.

Waterford gradually settled into the game with Paudric Mahony converting two frees and when Murphy fired over they trailed by just one.

Jonathan Glynn’s goal after 15 minutes gave the winners added impetus. Shane Moloney and Conor Cooney added scores either side of a point from Waterford substitute Martin F O’Neill.

They got the perfect start to the second half when Jake Dillon’s harmless enough shot for a point in the 32nd minute dipped and was mis-controlled by Galway goalkeeper Shane Kelly, who was horrified to see the sliotar drop behind him for a goal.

Points from Gavin O’Brien and Mahony added to their hope but, significantly, Galway were able to respond through Albert Mullins and Moloney.

Dillon was the man to snatch a second goal, finishing smartly in the 45th minute but Galway struck for four points in as many minutes to open a five-point gap.

Moloney converted three frees in this period, while Padraic Brehony also flighted one over and though Stephen Roche did get one back for Waterford, it was too little too late.
