All-Ireland Cup / Galwegians 13 Cashel 9: Galwegians were forced to dig deep by junior side Cashel before emerging victorious in this All-Ireland Cup tie at Crowley Park yesterday.
For long periods it seemed as if the minnows might just give the fledgling competition the headline-grabber it needs. But while Galwegians had little impact behind the scrum, their pack produced the goods and two pushover tries, one in either half, were enough for victory.
Cashel dominated for long periods but rarely looked like crossing for a try. Scrumhalf Ollie McGlinchey gave them great hope with a superb penalty after four minutes. That levelled the match after fullback Brendan Bartley posted a second-minute penalty, but Cashel hit the front when McGlinchey converted from 35 metres.
However, after 27 minutes Galwegians flanker Ivan Muldoon touched down to give them an 8-6 interval lead. Cashel went ahead with 15 minutes remaining when McGlinchey's penalty put them 9-8 up. Galwegians' pack produced the winning score eight minutes from time when replacement loosehead Ross Davies got the touchdown.
