Young Munster maintained their challenge for a top four finish while dooming Terenure College to a mid-table finish in Saturday's AIB League tie at Clifford Park.

Young Munster won more decisively than the 22-16 scoreline would indicate but otherwise it was a game which even their coach Brian Hickey is happy to forget.

"We played very badly and are capable of a lot more," he admitted. "There were too many errors and there is no doubt but that we will have to improve. That said, the points are precious to us and we should now be safe from relegation whatever about making it into the semi-finals".

Terenure were a bitter disappointment to their small band of supporters even though they did build up a 9-3 interval lead thanks to three penalty goals by Girvan Dempsey against one for Young Munster by Stephen Tuohy. Tuohy quickly equalised with two penalties immediately after half-time before Young Munster took a grip on the match with an intercepted try by Peter Boland which Tuohy converted.

Tuohy went on to bring his points total to 17 with two further penalties before substitute Brendan Kavanagh grabbed a late try for Terenure which Peter Walsh converted.

Coleraine AI advanced to the semi-finals of the Ulster Schools Cup with a deserved 18-17 victory over Royal School, Dungannon, on Saturday.

The sides were level at 10-10 at half time, Andrew Hughes having scored a try for Dungannon with Colin McLean crashing over the Dungannon line. In the second half a Scott Moffett try gave Coleraine the upper hand but Dungannon's persistence was rewarded with a Nigel Brady try.
