An alleged assault on a Limerick GAA referee is being investigated by gardaí in Askeaton.

An alleged assault on a Limerick GAA referee is being investigated by gardaí in Askeaton.

The assault is alleged to have occurred a few minutes from the final whistle in the west Limerick junior B hurling game between Adare and Kilcornan.

It has been confirmed that the referee, Michael Walsh, made a statement to the Garda.

Mr Walsh was unwilling to comment other than to confirm there was an "incident".

According to sources, the referee was struck on the neck with a hurley by an Adare player, and comments were passed, at a stage when the sides were deadlocked.

The assault is alleged to have occurred after the referee had awarded a free to Kilcornan on the halfway line.

The referee then abandoned the match.

A report by the referee has been sent to the west Limerick board.
