The seven-goal haul in their first World Cup warm-up is the largest by Germany since the 8-2 thrashing of Liechtenstein two years ago.

Israel, making their first visit to Germany, took a shock lead in the 27th minute after fine acrobatics from goalkeeper Dudu Awat had kept the Germans out. In the second half it was the Germans all the way, led by Klose. Dietmar Hamann, Oliver Bierhoff, Gerald Asamoah and Lars Ricken all got on the scoresheet with a goal apiece as the Israeli defenc caved in.

Before the game, the talk was of heavy security for the first hosting of Israel on German soil. Several hundred police turned back cars and checked visitors pockets and bags on entry, although the promised metal detectors did not materialise.
