Swimming: Chantal Gibney, despite registering a personal best time, finished 10th overall in the 200 metres freestyle at the European Championships in Helsinki yesterday, reports Pat Roche.

Gibney, who has already broken Michelle de Bruin's 100 metres time, clocked a personal best of two minutes 2.85 seconds. Emma Robinson, of Bangor finished seventh in the final of the 50 metres breaststroke with a new personal best and an Irish record of 32.54 seconds.

Meanwhile, Michael Williamson led a clean sweep in the 50 metres breaststroke at the Scottish Championships in Glasgow yesterday, clocking 30.26 seconds. Graham Beegan took second in 30.74 seconds, while Mack Craig finished third in 31.02 seconds.

Casey broke twice in the first set, at the beginning of the second and again in the fifth game. Despite defeat, McGill can make the Davis Cup squad against Croatia. In a far more competitive semi-final, Peter Clarke defeated Conor Niland by dint of a 7-5 win in the second set tie-break. Clarke got crucial breaks in the 10th game of the first set and again in the eighth of the second set.

Cricket: Merrion won both Section A of the Leinster Senior League - sponsored by Whitney Moore and Keller - and the Lewis Traub-sponsored 50 Overs League last season, so perhaps it is both apt and something of a consolation that they will host the final of the latter competition at Anglesea Road this afternoon, reports Karl Johnston.

This time around, The Hills and Phoenix are in opposition. The Hills' line-up has a familiar look about it. The only change of note is that the near-veteran Mick Dwyer stands down with New Zealander Dwayne Dundon taking over as wicket-keeper. Pheonix's wicket-keeper Des Ryan is unavailable and so Jamie Carnegie takes his place.

The Hills will be looking for good performances from Mark, Luke and Joseph Clinton, Barry and Stephen Archer and Matt Dwyer. John Atkinson, Jeremy Bray, Carnegie, Imran Masood and Gary Black are likely to be key players for Phoenix.

Hockey: Ireland avoided the prospect of relegation into the C Division of the women's European under-21 championship with a decisive 3-0 win over Poland in Prague yesterday. They now face Belgium today for fifth place.
