ATHLETICS:David Gillick served major notice last night that he has no intention of relinquishing his European indoor 400metres title, writes Ian O'Riordan.
As the build up for the European Indoor championships in Birmingham on the first weekend of March continues, Gillick scorched the track in Dusseldorf for a victory in a time of 45.91 seconds.
In the process he established himself as the world leader over the distance, set a new Irish indoor record - bettering Paul McKee's 2003 45.99 record, smashed his own personal best and also put himself within striking distance of McKee's outdoor Irish record of 45.58 set in 2002. It was brilliant running by the young Dubliner who is clearly benefitting from his recent move to England.
BOXING:The president of the International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) Dr Ching Kuo Wu will attend the European Union Championships which will be held at the National Stadium in Dublin in June.
Irish Amateur Boxing Association (IABA) president Dominic O'Rourke yesterday confirmed that Dr Kuo Wu, from Taiwan, will be a guest of honour at the championships which will be held between June 17th and 25th.
It is the IABA's intention to use the European Union Championships, which will feature up to 30 nations, as a dress rehearsal for the World Championships which they hope to stage on their 100th birthday in 2011.
HOCKEY:Trinity and UCD's first teams split the honours in the men's and women's finals at Belfield yesterday, but Trinity were the overall Colours' winners when all the day's results were added up, writes Mary Hannigan. Barry Glavey gave Trinity a half-time lead in the men's final, with Chris Tyrell and Ben Hewitt securing the win with second-half goals. UCD's Roisin Flinn, who deflected home a Christine Quinlan effort, got the only goal of the women's final.
