Career
1959:Signs professional forms with Milan and plays more than 300 games, mainly in defence though sometimes as a defensive midfielder. Wins two Serie A titles with the club (1962 and 68), two European Cups (63 and 69), a Coppa Italia in 1967 and a European Cup Winners' Cup in 1968
1971:Leaves for FC Varesse, where he plays just 10 games before retiring having earned 17 international caps
1974:Appointed as coach of Milan
1976:Takes over at Juventus, where he guides the club to six league titles (1977, 78, 81, 82, 84 and 86), two Coppa Italias (79 and 83), a European Cup (85) and a UEFA Cup (77)
1986:Moves to Inter where he wins one league (1989) and the Uefa Cup (1991)
1991:Returns to Juventus, where he wins the Uefa Cup (1993)
1994:Moves to Germany and Bayern Munich
1995:Returns to Italy for brief spell at Cagliari
1996:Takes on Bayern Munich again and becomes the first foreign coach to win the Bundesliga (1997) and subsequently adds the cup (1998)
1998:Goes back to Italy to manage Fiorentina and gets them into the Champions League
2000:Appointed national coach to the Italy team, which qualifies for two finals tournaments, the World Cup in 2002 and European Championship in 2004, but performs poorly at both
2004:Becomes Benfica manager and helps the club to secure its first Portuguese title in more than a decade (2005)
2005:Has brief and unsuccessful spell at Stuttgart, where his defensive style proves unpopular with players
2006:Moves to Red Bull Salzburg, where he is assisted by Lothar Matthaus and wins league in first season (2007). Red Bull fail to qualify for the Champions League group stages at the start of this season but are at present in a three-way tie for top spot in the league
